Analysis of the Prestige opening thriller

Information contained in the opening: First thing you saw was zoomed in on the floor of a dark, eerie forest with black magicians hats everywhere. We can clearly tell that the story line is based around magic and trickery. It is shown in a dramatic way of a trick going wrong and a suspected murder taking place involving the water tank.

Sound: Diegetic sounds of leaves rustling and the wind blowing to signify something bad is going to happen. And a non diegetic voice says "are you watching closely" which tells us that there is going to be hidden things in the film. Non diegetic violins are playing in the background of the man's dialogue, which sounds as thought they are building up to something.Diegetic speech is then heard over top of the action all the way through.

Enigma: The dialogue tells us about the secrets in the film by asking us "are you watching closely". The swapping of scenes shows us that the two scenes are linked in some way but we are unsure of how. It is not revealed in the first scene why this crime has occurred even though we see the lead up to it and how it happens.

Cinematography: The camera at the beginning zooms on the magicians hats on the floor to symbolize the theme of the film. A tracking shot was then shown to represent the key elements of the magic tricks, by showing us the bird lined up in their cages. A close up of the man's face introduces his to us as a main character which then leads onto show a close up of his hand gripping the bird which represents his power as the bird looks tiny compared to him.A long shot of the audience is shown to create the suspense as they watch the magic trick. It then also shows their reactions to this trick. A long shot is then shown of the court room, showing the atmosphere and a tracking shot showing the juries reaction to the crime. A low shot is shown of the judge as he speaks which could show to us the power that the witness has over whats going to happen, as its from his point of view.

Editing: The two scenes are cut so the switch from one to the other whilst a constant voice over is used explaining the story, so that the audience can see the visual story as it goes along. Special effects used in magic trick. The most dramatic part where you see the magician drowning fades into a court room to show the significance of this happening.

Mise en Scene: Costumes - Magician hats, and clothing used to represent the theme of the story. Court room costumes such as the white wigs and the long cloaks showing their importance compared to the rest of the jury who are in all black normal clothing. The murdered is also wearing normal clothing which shows that he has no power over what could happen to him. Props - birds, cage, the water tank all representing parts of the magic tricks. The bird being placed in the cage by the man telling the story symbolizes the man being locked in the water tank by the killer. Settings - House, on a stage in a theater showing the two scenes which are being described.

Graphics: Title appears on a plain black screen when its completely quiet to show the importance of its meaning, this then fades into the first scene.
